The town straddles two major river valleys-the Broad River Valley to the west and Hiwassee River Valley to the east. The first settlers in what is now Mount Pleasant arrived in1835 when Captain James Cook sailed his HMS Beagle through that area on his exploring voyage of discovery. Captain Cook's trip followed an earlier route taken by Chief Powhatan which crossed overland from present-day Georgia into modern day South Carolina. At that time there were no settlements in this area other than those near Savannah, Georgia. Over time, other groups traveling through this area developed relationships with local chiefs and decided to settle hereabouts because of these natural resources and opportunities for trade. Soon after becoming a town, Mount Pleasant started developing some makeshift infrastructure such as roads, school buildings, churches, stores etcetera as part of its efforts to become self-sufficient. Today much of what makes Mountpleasant unique is its volunteerism which has helped it maintain many aspects of its culture including Cousin Peeples Festival (July 4), annual golf tournament (October), live music concerts (May/June), summertime carnivals (July/August), festivals during different seasons (Christmas; Easter; Thanksgiving; Mother's Day) etcetera In addition much of what makes Mountpleasant special comes down to history: The first post office was established here in 1875 under name "Plymouth" after one of General Alfred Pleasonton's campaigns against Confederate forces during the American Civil War 1) Piper Museum opened its doors in 2006 within walking distance from all points within MtPleasant 2) African American Heritage Museum - open daily 10am-5pm 3) MtPleasant High School offers Associate’s degrees through three programs: Business Administration(BA); Science Technology & Engineering(STEM); Criminal Justice degree program 4) New Hope Baptist Church offers worship services Sundays 9am until 7pm with Bible study starting at 6pm sharp every morning 5) Presbyterian church offers worship services Sunday mornings at 9am CST

Mount Pleasant was founded in 1775 by the British colonist, James Post. The town grew rapidly during the early 1800s and soon had a population of over 1,500. Mount Pleasant became an important center for slave trade in the antebellum South and was known as "The Slave Capital of America." In 1848, Mount Pleasant was renamed Augusta after the American president, Ulysses S. Grant, who had presided over its incorporation into South Carolina. After Reconstruction ended in 1877, Mount Pleasant experienced rapid growth as a railroad town and developed into one of the most prosperous communities in south Carolina. However, during the 1990s it lost its status as a major African American hub due to persistent economic inequality and redevelopment efforts that have failed to address these issues.
The first white people to live in Mount Pleasant were the Tories who immigrated from Ulster, Ireland in 1775. They built a cabin on the hill and named it Mount Pleasant. The town was founded by a group of farmers who bought land around the hill. In 1810, a post office was established at Mount Pleasant and the town name changed to Columbia. In 1865, Mount Pleasant Tiger baseball team played their first game against Clemson University at Greenwood Stadium. Mount Pleasant became an important strategic location during the Civil War because it had a good water supply and plenty of timber. The Union army burned down many of the buildings in 1861 but eventually captured Mount Pleasant and renamed it Fort Sumter. During Reconstruction, Mountpleasant became one of South Carolina's most successful towns with many businesses being created including banks, insurance companies, and law firms. However, during the late 1960s through early 1970s mount pleasant experienced significant economic decline as its residents moved away for jobs in more developed areas of South Carolina or outside of South Carolina altogether.
