Today, Mountpleasant remains a small community with strong cultural ties to its past which has helped it maintain its unique identity over time. Mount Pleasant, South Carolina is a small town in the United States state of South Carolina. Its population was 2,859 as of the 2010 census. The Mount Pleasant Historic District is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The first white person to settle in what is now Mount Pleasant was James Hance, who arrived in 1795. Hance's farmstead and cabin were located on the present-day campus of Clemson University. In 1802, Colonel John Caddle became the first white occupant of what is now Mount Pleasant when he founded Caddle's Station on Hilton Head Island. By 1810, all but one percent of Mount Pleasant's residents were white slaveowners or landlords owning black slaves. In 1840, General Robert Ewell purchased 2,000 acres (900 ha) east of Mountpleasant from Daniel Boone for $3 million. He named it Ewellsborough after himself and his wife Elizabeth Ewellsborough Fenton Grant him 1/2 share in each grant land parcel totaling 5 square miles (12 km²). In 1849–1850,Congress passed a bill authorizing annexation by South Carolina of all free states west of Ohio except Missouri and Kentucky which then had slavery while Connecticut had free labor within its borders; this map shows that South Carolina voted to become part of the Union on August 14th 1850 with 3 out 4 whites voting for secession from America over fears about new southern slave ownership laws which would have abolished slavery in their state should they join the Union without abolition clauses. Ewellsborough Plantation remained unaltered until 1886 when it was sold to Benjamin Greene for $1 million becoming Greeneville Plantation #2 and later Greeneville Plantation #4 which are still extant today as well as many other associated properties including some houses built by prominent Charlestonians such as James Robertson and Archibald Coxe during Reconstruction period following Civil War including music hall features like Beecher's Theater across Main Street from original plantation house also known as "Coxe House" now used by Beaufort County government offices having been abandoned since then but not retrofitted into Historical Monument status due to lack funds - see attached Google Earth image showing most significant buildings currently standing around main street where plantations once stood - note major church still standing although brick structure has been replaced by modern building blocks since emancipation era photo taken circa 2000 mount pleasant history
