Mount Pleasant, South Carolina is a town located in Pickens County, South Carolina. The population was 7,693 at the 2010 census. Mount Pleasant is named for General Daniel Morgan and his family who settled here in 1799. The town site was first surveyed in 1811 by Captain John Horry of the British Army. The first store in Mount Pleasant was built on the corner of Main and State Streets in 1813 by Solomon Aiken. In 1865, James Gandy began to build a sawmill on Red Mill Creek which became one of the largest mills in Pickens County. Gandy's mill closed in 1902 but reopened as an agricultural implement company in 1907 under the name "Gandy-Langdon." In 1926, Rufus Hines established a feed store and post office at what is now downtown Mount Pleasant. The Pickens County Courthouse Annex building was completed in 1929 and serves as courthouse annex for Pickens County and as a public library for Mount Pleasant township. The old jail also served as county court house from 1886 until it closed in 1951. A new courthouse was constructed at its present location between 1961 and 1966; it has been used as both court house and sheriff's office since it opened. In 2002, members of the mountpleasant project team successfully rebuilt parts of an early 20th century cotton gin complex located east of downtown on Brown Road near Wilkinson High School that had been destroyed by fire over 25 years earlier. This reconstruction project helped restore some lost fabric features including original brick chimneys, doorways, window panes, flooring, doors locks etcetera that would not have been possible without such restoration work done onsite.
