In 1861 General Robert Ewell Schofield donated land to build an academy which would later become Clemson University. On March 17, 1865, Confederate General John Custer's 10th Kansas Cavalry stopped at the church while on their way to attack Union forces near Bentonville. Aftermath of the Battle of Cedar Mountain left a number of dead including many soldiers from Mount Pleasant Baptist Church where Revs Hernando Webb and George Washington were preaching that Sunday morning.< ref name="7/24">< ref= "9/1">< ref= "4/14">On November 15th 1865, President Abraham Lincoln delivered his Gettysburg Address from atop Cemetery Hill overlooking Fort Sumter which began what would be known as America's Civil War.
