Mount Pleasant is a small town located in Spartanburg County, South Carolina. The population was 1,814 at the 2010 census. Mount Pleasant is internationally known for its production of white peach wine. The first people to live in what is now Mount Pleasant were the Cherokee Indians who called it "Tadawatha". The early settlers arrived during the early 1800s and built their homes on the banks of the Saluda River. They were farmers and traders and made a living by growing rice, corn, beans, sweet potatoes, peas, tobacco and other crops. In 1825, Colonel James Gadsden organized a militia to protect his citizens from slaveholders in neighboring counties. This group became known as "Gadsden's Rangers." In 1827 Captain John Dandridge founded Fort Dandridge on an island in the Saluda River. He named it after himself because he had seen soldiers marching through town with banners reading "Dandridge's Rangers." In 1830–31 Major General David Hunter led an expedition against rebel forces near Mount Pleasant. Some of these troops camped at Fort Dandridge while others remained at nearby White Sulphur Springs where they built artillery pieces and stores for their campaign. In 1838 Union General Banks attacked Charleston with his army under General Ulysses S Grant along with Confederate General Prentiss Smith and cavalry units under Major Samuel Stoneman inside Fort Sumter. For three days intense fighting took place before Banks was forced to retire with his entire force damaged or destroyed including two cannons captured from the Rebels by Prentiss Smith . At this point slavery in South Carolina ended effective January 6th 1861 when statehood was granted to South Carolina pursuant to Article IV of the Constitution of South Carolina as follows: "All persons born or naturalized within this State (excluding slaves) are citizens thereof; neither slavery nor involuntary servitude shall exist within any territory acquired by conquest or cession since 1789." As part of Reconstruction policy following this event African Americans were given some civil rights but these were not fully realized until several decades later when integration began throughout much of southern America upon formalized policies developed most notably by President Lyndon Johnson
Mount Pleasant is located in the town of Mount Pleasant, in York County, South Carolina. The community was founded by African Americans in 1853 as part of a movement to remove white settlers from the area. The town was renamed Mount Pleasant after General James K. Polk in 1881.
