Mount Pleasant, South Carolina (population: 10,000) is a town in Greenville County, South Carolina. The population was 7,844 as of the 2010 census. Mount Pleasant is located on the border of Spartanburg County and Pickens County. It is bordered by Spartanburg to the north and east, Greenville to the south and west, and Laurens to the northwest. According to the United States Census Bureau, Mount Pleasant has a total area of 5square miles (13 km²), all of it land. The first Europeans to see Mount Pleasant were Frenchmen who visited in 1736. They named it Pointe des Neiges after an isolated peak in nearby McCormick Creek Valley that they saw from their ship while sailing down stream towards Charleston Harbor. By 1740 American colonists had founded a small settlement at what is now Mount Pleasant with seven homes and three stores along McCormick Creek Road. The British captured Charleston during the English Revolution in 1745 and moved their military headquarters into Fort Moultrie on Quinby Island near present-day Columbia River Gorge before moving back upriver several miles to establish a new capital at Augusta on Hilton Head Island in 1748.
