As a result of this period of peace there was no major development or migration to South Carolina until after General Robert Ewell's victory at Battle of Gettysburg in 1864 resulting in more troops being sent to Charleston for garrison duty following Reconstruction efforts by President Andrew Johnson seeking revenge against ConfederateGeneral Ewell for his successful defense at that particular battle When Hurricane Katrina struck New Orleans on August 29th 2005 there were fears that coastal communities along the Gulf Coast might follow suit since similar storms have frequently hit these areas during recent times . However fortunately few homes were destroyed or flooded within those areas near Mobile Bayou although some mobile homes did sink into water up to their rooflines creating difficulties for residents trying to evacuate later affected areas such as Mississippi Beach where many people lost their possessions including bicycles when they were swept away during evacuation attempts . Overall however very few people lived anywhere along Louisiana's coast outside Baton Rouge which may account for why so little damage occurred as a result of Katrina

In 1872, Mount Pleasant was incorporated as a city and soon became one of the most important financial centers in southern South Carolina. During the 1960s and 1970s, Mount Pleasant experienced significant economic growth due to its location within the peanut butter and jelly industry and its status as an educational center for African American students. Mount Pleasant is located at (33.959779,-81.814451). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , all of it land. As of the census of 2010, there were 1,711 people residing in Mountpleasanttownships. The racial makeup of this community was 89% white (non-Hispanic), 9% black or African American, 2% Native American/Alaskan Native, 0% Asian/Pacific Islander, 3% from other races, and 4% from two or more races.
