The town was founded in 1799 by Major Henry Greene and his brother Major John Greene. The first white settler in Mount Pleasant was Jonas Gentry who arrived in 1799. In 1807, Colonel Alexander Macon donated land to form what would become Mount Pleasant Township. In 1814, General Gideon Welles built Fort Augusta to protect Charleston from British attack. When Fort Augusta fell in 1815, General Hugh Scott took over command of the Charleston defense force and moved artillery southward to Mount Pleasant for use against British forces entrenched at Sullivans Island. In 1817, when Confederate General Pemberton invaded South Carolina during the American Civil War, he found Mount Pleasant unguarded and ordered his men to burn it down as a warning to other southern towns that would support the Union cause. When Sherman's Union army invaded Georgia in 1865, he pillaged through much of South Carolina including Mount Pleasant before moving on towards Savannah. When Sherman reached Mountpleasant he burned all but one house and looted many others while leaving behind stores of supplies and furniture which had been preserved by locals as trophies of war victory.. In 1928 MtPleasant Presbyterian Church was added to the National Register of Historic Places listings in Spartanburg County, South Carolina because it "represents an early example of Congregationalist architecture."

Laser Target Progression continued development until 1992 when engineers at Texas Instruments Corporation developed technology known asInfrared Arrays (IRAs) which permitted users to see their targets even if they were located behind obstructions such as trees or buildings. With this technology, laser sights became available on pistols and rifles which could now be aimed at anything from close ranges up into much longer ranges without having to change elevation settings or adjust optics specifically for red dots!

In 1898, white farmers from Clemson purchased land east of Mount Pleasant and began to build homes there. The town's first post office opened at this location on October 3rd of that year. In 1915, the United States Postal Service moved its main offices from Greenville to Spartanburg to avoid competition from Memphis Post Office which had opened earlier that year. The First World War accelerated production at nearby Wofford College which resulted in an increase demand for goods produced by local businesses including grocery stores and feed mills; these businesses were gradually replaced by larger chain stores as technology improved during the 1920s and 1930s when transportation became more available; however, small businesses continued to thrive until the early 1970s when brickyards closed due to advances in tractor assembly lines and other technological advancements
