There are several theories about why Fort Sumter went up in flames; some say Confederate artillery misfired, others say Union troops set fire to the fort during nightfall after learning about Confederate troop movements. In 1955, Driggs Cotton Mill opened operations in Mountpleasant with help from Carnegie Corporation of New York City's Rural Electrification Administration (CEA). After the war, Mount Pleasant declined as a leading community until it regained some prominence in the 20th century when it began to redevelop as a modern city.
The town of Mount Pleasant was chartered on December 11, 1781, by the South Carolina General Assembly. The original settlers were white men and women who land speculation in the area. They named their new community after a mountain in Scotland which they saw as a beautiful site. The first post office was established in 1785, and the current one was built in 1876. Mount Pleasant became an important stop on the Underground Railroad during the 1800s because of its strategic location at the intersection of two major roads.
