Mount Pleasant is a small town located in the state of South Carolina. The population was 4,564 as of the 2010 census. Mount Pleasant is part of Greenville County. The town was founded in 1811 and named for General Andrew Jackson's estate in Tennessee. The town is on the Upper Ashley River, about 20 miles from Greenville and 15 miles from Columbia. It is bordered by Edgefield to the east, Greenwood to the south, Anderson to the west, and McCormick to the north. Mount Pleasant was first surveyed in 1811 by Captain John Brown and named after General Andrew Jackson's estate in Tennessee. The first settler in Mount Pleasant was John Searles who arrived around 1812. He built a cabin on what is now Main Street and named it "Estate." In 1816 he married Sarah Goodloe and they moved into a log cabin near present-day McCullough Road which they called "Goodloe Court." They had six children: four daughters and two sons. One daughter became Mrs. David Humphrey who lived at 502 Easley Avenue until her death in 1967; one son became Mayor Robert Hays; one son became a Rear Admiral with U S Navy during World War II; one son died young age at 26 years old while serving his country overseas when his helicopter crashed into an Iwo Jima tree during combat operations! After 16 years Mrs Searles sold her home but continued to live there with her six kids until their deaths also aged 26yrs each (one just26yrs). Their youngest daughter Sarah A Gentry Searles still lives there as of 2018 living with her momma & grandda thruout this time frame too
