In Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, the people have been using firearms for centuries to target game and other targets. The first guns were used in this area in the early 1800s. At that time, there were no roads or other means of transportation so people had to rely on horses and dogs to get around. Targets were set up near water sources or places where animals would drink. Guns were also used as hunting tools back then and many people still use them today to hunt Gamecock, rabbits, squirrels, deer, etc. One of the earliest mountaintop gun ranges was established in Mount Pleasant in 1851 by Captain John Pinchot of the United States Army’s 1st Infantry Regiment. This range was located on the east side of town between Coliseum Road and Church Street. The purpose of this range was to shoot at small game such as rabbits, squirrels, deer and birds which could be easily hunted with a rifle because they flew away when hit by a bullet. The first handguns were not produced until after World War II when Americans began to buy weapons for self-defense reasons following the introduction of handguns into our society from Europe. Today there are many different types of targets available for shooters in Mount Pleasant including pistols and rifles; however, some things that are still popular among shooters include airguns (gun pellets), birdshot and shotgun shells fired from shotguns into cans filled with water which create a realistic replica of an animal being shot at from high up in order to simulate taking down a large animal like a buck or bear from a distance.

On July 17, 1871, Confederate General Robert E. Lee surrendered at Appomattox Court House in Virginia. The event marked the end of the American Civil War and led to a period of Reconstruction in South Carolina. After the war, many white men were unable or unwilling to re-establish slavery and began to buy land in Mount Pleasant as part of the process of Reconstruction. To accommodate these new arrivals, the town established a number of schools and other infrastructure projects. In 1865, Union General Ulysses S. Grant destroyed the state Capitol building in Charleston after its defenders refused to surrender. This event is also noteworthy for being one of only two occasions on which Confederate forces sacked an American city (the other occurred during Sherman's invasion of Georgia). Mount Pleasant's population increased rapidly during Reconstruction, reaching over 100,000 by 1881. During this time, it also became a center for black political activity and education; African Americans constituted about 30% of Mount Pleasant's population by 1899. After Reconstruction ended in 1877, Southern whites regained control over local government and economic life; this period is sometimes referred to as "The Dark Ages" for Mount Pleasant. In recent years, however, there has been renewed interest in Mountpleasant's history due to its unique location within Interstate 95 corridor and its connections with various events throughout South Carolina history
Mount Pleasant is a small town in York County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 1,475 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Greenville-Spartanburg-Anderson Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1811 by Andrew Pickens and named for his plantation on Mount Pleasant Creek. The first township was organized in 1837 and the first post office was established in 1841. The name of the town changed to Mount Pleasant in 1868 when it became an incorporated municipality. The iron works were located here from 1859 until 1865 when they were closed due to financial troubles. In 1896, a water tower appeared on Cemetery Hill which served as a landmark for many years before being destroyed by fire. The Mount Pleasant Historical Society has preserved several buildings including the old courthouse and jail where most of the early white settlers lived and died during the 1800s. There are also three churches: One built around 1840, one built around 1860, and one built around 1870 which is still standing today. In addition to its rich history, Mount Pleasant has some beautiful aspects that make it an attractive place to live such as its wide variety of trees lining main streets, rolling hills with plenty of picturesque creeks flowing through them, and friendly people who enjoy giving back to their community through volunteerism or donations to local organizations such as First Presbyterian Church (founded in 1792), Boys & Girls Club (founded 1915), Presbyterian Church (1864), American Legion Post #2 (1915), etc..

After the war ended in 1865, Mountpleasant slowly declined until it stopped being an important commercial center in the early 20th century. Today, Mountpleasant is a small unincorporated community located within Ashley County.
