It wasn’t until 1974 when new federal law changed background checks requirements for firearm purchases from federally licensed dealers rather than just private sellers which caused many companies like Colt ®& Sig Sauer ®to go out of business)…. Mount Pleasant, South Carolina is located in the Eastern Panhandle of South Carolina. The town was named after Mount Pleasant, a mountain in North Carolina that is highest point in the state. The population of Mount Pleasant was 3,711 as of 2018. Mount Pleasant began as a small community on the edge of civilization. In 1828, Colonel John Cotes purchased 640 acres (248 hectares) of land east of present-day Mount Pleasant and built a log cabin known as White's Cabin. For many years, this was the only house in town. In 1848, Colonel John Cotes' grandson erected another log cabin on what is now State Route 11 near the intersection of State Routes 521 and 229. This became known as Blacksmiths Cabin because it served as the local blacksmithing shop for all residents of Mount Pleasant. The first post office in Mountpleasant opened on April 1, 1853 with Wm Hinton serving as its first clerk. By 1870, there were 10 businesses operating in Mountpleasant with a population total of 2,500 people including 400 households. By 1896, most residents had moved away to new towns or become farmers and miners within 100 miles (161 km) of their homes while some remained behind to maintain old-time culture and continue farming and ranching activities which continues until present day

The town was named for General Nathaniel Pollock, who had helped to defeat the British in the Battle of Charleston. Mount Pleasant grew quickly and by 1801 it had a population of around 100 people. By 1830, Mount Pleasant had become an important stop on the Underground Railroad, helping fugitive slaves escape from slavery. In 1865, during the American Civil War, Mountpleasant residents aided Confederate forces by providing them with food and shelter. After the war ended, Mountpleasant slowly declined until it all but disappeared in the late 19th century. In 1951, however, a small community called "The Gap" began to develop near Mountpleasant and it soon became known as one of South Carolina's most vibrant agricultural communities. Today, Mountpleasant is still an important stop on the Underground Railroad and its history is still being explored. There are several museums located in town about different aspects of MountPleasant's history - such as its early settlers and their descendants, local businesses that were founded during its heyday (such as The Gap store), and local events that have been associated with the town since its earliest days (such as Bike Week).
