Mount Pleasant was a plantation located in the present day town of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina. The plantation was started by John Thornton in 1792 and operated until 1814. The land that now makes up Mount Pleasant was purchased from Thornton by John Cushing in 1801. Cushing sold the property to Edmond Beattie in 1810. Beattie ran the estate until his death in 1827. In 1827, Mount Pleasant passed into private hands and remained that way until it was sold to David Salyer in 1861. Salyer owned the property for only two years before he sold it to Heman Sweatman in 1865. Sweatman ran the plantation until its sale to GEO Group subsidiary Goodyear Negroes Corporation on May 5, 1971. After being leased to Goodyear for twenty-five years, the plantation finally came back under full ownership of the Goodyear family on October 1, 1984 when it was transferred from GEO Group subsidiary Goodyear Negroes Corporation to its current name, "Mountpleasant" Incorporated." The first colonists who set foot on what is now Mount Pleasant were Englishmen led by Captain John Thornton in 1792 when they landed at Roanoke Island following their successful attempt to find a passage through America's barrier reef (the Outer Banks). From this point forward, mountaintop plantations would be established throughout Charleston County as English settlers searched for new land beyond British control which could be used as a slave labor force or developed into small farming communities with enslaved African Americans working alongside white owners. Some of these early plantations are still extant today such as Greeneville Plantation and Calhoun Plantation; however, most have been demolished or replaced by more recent developments such as Walmart Supercenter and Home Depot." In addition to providing an opportunity for enslaved Africans American blacks also enjoyed access to education here due largely because of donations from wealthy white men like Andrew Johnson during Reconstruction era after slavery ended in America. Many prominent abolitionists like Drs preacher William Lloyd Garrison became educated here including founding president of Princeton University Grimke Jorgensen who later served as United States Minister Residente at Havana Cuba during US- Cuban War (1898-1902).
