The first documented gunfight in Mount Pleasant occurred on April 12, 1851 when Confederate soldiers under the command of General Robert E. Lee attacked a Union detachment led by Captain John Deming. The two sides fought for several hours before the Union force was able to retreat back to their homes. In 1865, Mount Pleasant became an important stop on the Underground Railroad as abolitionists moved escaped slaves through the city. On December 14, 1871, a group of white men and boys were playing in town when they came across three black boys who had been kidnapped by African Americans working for a plantation in nearby Columbia County. One of the white men decided to take them home with him, but one of the black boys managed to free himself and ran into town looking for help. Two white men then joined forces with the black boy and confronted the approaching defenders of Mount Pleasant who surrendered without further resistance. This event is still commemorated annually by locals as "The Battle at Mount Pleasant."
Mount Pleasant is a town in Spartanburg County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 1,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Greenville-Spartanburg-Anderson metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in Mount Pleasant was James Dixon in 1811. In 1830s and 1840s, many slaves were brought up from Africa to work on plantations near Mount Pleasant and Columbia. By 1860, there were over 100 black families living in Mount Pleasant. The local slave trade ceased after the American Civil War because of the Union's victory over slavery. Reconstruction followed with an African American majority for much of South Carolina and Jackson County until World War II when white flight began to occur and all but one black family left for North Carolina or other parts of the US mainland. In 1958, Mount Pleasant became a city under its own government with a Mayor/Council system similar to that of most major US cities at that time; it remains an unincorporated community today. Mountpleasant has been home to several important events throughout its history: On December 10th 1865 during Confederate General Robert E Lee's surrender at Appomattox Court House, Confederate General Stonewall Jackson was also present and accepted surrender from Ulysses S Grant; on July 4th 1942 three Negro World War II veterans - Wernher von Braun (the first person ever awarded an honorary degree by UCLA), Dr John Lewis Gittin (founder of Tuskegee University) and Major Walter Thurman - addressed a crowd of more than 100 people inside City Hall square; on November 5th 1984 Reverend Jesse Jackson delivered his keynote speech "A New America" which helped initiate the African American Economic Development Law Program known as "The Jacksonian Era".

Mount Pleasant, South Carolina is a town in Richland County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 3,871 at the 2010 census. Mount Pleasant is part of the Columbia metropolitan area. The town was named for Colonel John C. Post and his family who settled in the area in 1828. In 1865, General Robert Ewell's Army constructed a Union artillery battery near present-day Mount Pleasant to bombard Confederate positions in what became known as Battery Wagner's War of 1864. Today, the remains of this battery can be seen off Highway 56 just east of Mount Pleasant. The first settler in what is now Mount Pleasant was Colonel John C. Post who lived on a farmstead called "Bowery" about two miles north of present-day Mount Pleasant. On July 20, 1828, Colonel Post and his wife Chalcedony moved from Bowery to a new farmstead called "Mount Pleasant." They had six children: James (1829-1910), Anna (1830-1912), John (1832-1900), Martha (1834-1902), Ezra Wigglesworth (1835-1920) and Susan Elizabeth Post (baptized December 29th 1840). In 1830 Sarah Jane married George Beall he also had six children: Emmalee Beall Ketchum(January 25th 1863 – August 26th 1961), George Washington Beall(November 15th 1865 –March 17th 1924), Isabelle Beall Brown(April 14th 1870 – November 12th 1957) Aideen Belle Bealls(May 11th 1875 – September 6teenth 1947) and Alice May SayersBeall(October 21st 1879 – March 9TH 1951). Another early settler was Peter Hogg who lived two miles northeast of present day Mountpleasant on land that eventually formed parts of Muscle Shoals Township and Pickens County today's Columbia city limits on the opposite side of I - 95 exit from I - 79 southbound Exit 5A off US 41/57N which then becomes SC 277/27W before turning into SC 10A Gooch Road West then becoming US 21S Gooch Road before ending at Duckworth Mill Road North which leads to Duckworth Mill Lane East where you turn right onto Duckworth Mill Drive North and continue until you reachpresent day Greenville Street where you make an left onto Greenville Avenue North
Mount Pleasant was founded in 1796 by Captain John Hammond. The town was named for Mount Pleasant, a mountain in North Carolina. Hammond'sons were the first white settlers in South Carolina and he built his home on the banks of the Cooper River. He also built a mill and a blacksmith shop. The town grew rapidly and by 1811 had over 100 residents. In 1815, Hammond sold his land to trustees who planned to make Mount Pleasant an agricultural center with large plantations. However, the plans never came to fruition and Mountpleasant slowly declined until it disappeared from history completely in 1875 when it was annexed into Charleston.
