During World War II, Mountpleasant saw plenty of action as it played an important role along with other small towns across southern South Carolina in providing food storage for troops during Operation Crossroads. In 1944, local residents helped form Augusta-based Union Carbide Company which manufactured munitions near Mount pleasant until its closure in 1984 due to heavy pollution from its plants nearby
