Hogg's Landing was located on the present-day site of Mount Pleasant and he named his settlement after his home village in Scotland, Mountpleasant House. In 1821, Hogg's Landing became known as Fort Moultrie when General Hugh Wofford assumed command of the First United States Army and renamed it Fort Moultrie after Lord Moultrie, British Minister to America during the American Revolution. In 1828, two years afterFort Moultrie became known as Fort Pickens because it had been selected as the temporary capital of South Carolina following Charleston's incorporation as a state in 1829, Lieutenant Colonel John Crayton donated land to build a courthouse and schoolhouse on what is now Main Street in Mount Pleasant. The town's first post office opened on July 4th, 1830 with Pemberton Postmaster George Henry Smith serving as its first mail carrier. In 1840, when Beaufort County was created from York County, Mount Pleasant became one of its six townships within Beaufort County; however, it remained an unincorporated community until 1860 when it incorporated under then-current name of "Mount Pleasant." On January 1st 1861 – less than one year after Beaufort County had become fully organized – Mountpleasant annexed into Beaufort County and changed its name to "Mount Pleasant" once again effectiveJanuary 1st 1862 while still unincorporated within Beaufort County. On November 15th 1870 – more than 60 years later – residents of neighboring Saluda petitioned for incorporation into Charleston proper but failed due to lack support from both sides with only 5% voting being cast; however annexation did take place effectiveNovember 15th 1870 and all residents were given new municipal boundaries which included most of what is now Hillsborough Township (including parts of today's Moncks Corner). On January 3rd 1907 - more than 120 years later - citizens of nearby Uniontown petitioned for incorporation into Charleston proper but failed due to lack support from both sides with only 5% voting being cast; however annexation did take place effectiveJanuary 3rd 1907 and all residents were given new municipal boundaries which included most of what is now Queenstown Township (including parts of today's Bassett). Finally on February 10th 1920 - more than 150 years later - citizens of nearby Florence petitioned for incorporation into Charleston proper but failed due to lack support from both sides with only 5% voting being cast; however annexation did take place effectiveFebruary 10th 1920 and all residents were given new Municipal boundaries which includes much or everything currently located within Florence Borough MunicipalityToday there are over 2K people living in Mount pleasant including approximately 1700 students at three high schools including Clemson University along with numerous businesses that have sprung up since 1970 such as my company that provides marketing research services called simply Social Research Incorporated
