The town is located in Greenville County on the banks of the Cooper River, about 25 miles (40 km) southeast of Columbia, the state capital. In 1865 it became part of Greenville County after being organized from parts of neighboring Kershaw County. The first post office opened in 1837,[5] and mail service to Mauldin began operations on July 6th, 1840.[6] By 1860 there were twelve stores,[7] three churches,[8] one millinery shop,[9][10], one blacksmith shop,[11][12][13],[14][15], one physician practice [16], one schoolhouse [17],[18], four residences[19], two churches (the original Congregationalist and Methodist), twenty-nine slaves (about eighty percent owned by whites), four hogsheads whiskey (about $3 per barrel at that time)[20], five hundred acres (two hectares) tobacco land,[21],[22]), five hundred pounds (27 kg) lead wire Copper ore mined near present-day Union Point Mines,[23],[24]), six hundred acres potatoes raised for sale or exchange under a system known as "grazing" ([25]). This land included what is now central Mauldin and portions of present-day Davidson County. Originally called "Mauldain", this name was anglicized to "Maulden" upon arrival in America and it stuck until 1840 when it changed again to "Mauldin." During Reconstruction Era times (1865–1913), Mauldin attracted many white Southerners who wanted to return home after being removed from their homes during the American Civil War era (1861– 1865). Some Main Street businesses still operate today including: Grits 'N' Grinds BBQ restaurant; Old Hickory Brewery; Weiser Hardware store; Masonic temple; post office; Budget Bikes & More Cycles store; and First Baptist Church which meets at different locations throughout town every Sunday morning since 1971. Today's economy relies heavily on agriculture due to its history as one of South Carolina's main industries dating back over 100 years!
