Mauldin is a small town in central South Carolina, United States. The population was 1,452 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Greenville– Spartanburg– Union County, SC Metropolitan Statistical Area. Mauldin was founded by white families who arrived from England in the early 1800s and German immigrants in the 1830s. The first post office in Mauldin was established on February 3, 1833. By 1845, there were nine existences in Mauldin with a total population of ninety-six people. In 1860, Mauldin had a population of 275 people and by 1880 it had increased to 514 people. At that time, most of the growth came from new arrivals rather than from natural increase as happened before. In 1890, there were 1,811 residents living in Mauldin and by 1900 it had grown to 2,569 residents (of which 471 were classified as “native born”). As more African Americans moved into Mauldin over time they lost some their own white citizens but gained many sharecroppers and other manual laborers who worked on farms or businesses within town limits. One common story about how Integration began is that one black man named Willie became manager of a grocery store near town center and started helping integrate local schools into school systems across South Carolina through his business acumen and relationships with influential whites he met along the way; however this account does not match up with historical reality very well given that no African American individual ever served as an owner or manager of any store within town limits during this time period despite being extremely visible due to his connections within white society (Walker & Henson 2003). Overall though Willie may have initiated integration at some point during this time period it largely resulted from pressure exerted by powerful whites – both inside and outside of town – who desired gradual social change throughout southern rural areas where race mattered greatly for economic development purposes (Foley 2004). In 1955 when all towns south of I-95 were placed under state control following passage of the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), Mauldin reverted back to its pre- Integration status quo ante bellum without any major changes taking place; however because its location made it susceptible to numerous federal civil rights investigations conducted throughout South Carolina during this era such as "Operation Mockingbird" led by then U.S Attorney General Robert F Kennedy (Newkirk 1960) many smallscale property seizures occurred throughout 1966 resulting in significant community backlash against government activity without prior warning or consultation which complicated matters further creating tension between local officials and their constituents culminating ultimately in violent protests known as "the rediscovery movement."
