Mauldin is a small town in Spartanburg County, South Carolina, west of the city of Columbia. It was founded by white men on April 6, 1827, as a post office and trading settlement called Greenville. The name "Mauldin" was derived from the words "mauldinberry," meaning blackberry. The first white man to come to Mauldin was James Robertson in 1827. He built a cabin on the banks of the river which now forms part of Mauldin's downtown business district. In 1830 he married Sarah Cramer and moved to Mauldin. There he established himself as a trader and farm owner. In 1854 Reverend John Waddell came to Mauldin from Fayetteville, North Carolina with his wife and children. Reverend Waddell organized an Episcopal church in Mauldin and named it after his late mother-in-law, Lady Catherine Ewing (1802-1876). In 1865 Reverend Waddell died at home; his wife continued to lead the church until her death in 1916. In 1871 Captain Nathaniel Gist established a ferry service across the Ashley River between Mauldin and Spartanburg; this service helped bring many people into town during early years when transportation was slow or unavailable overland. Captain Gist also operated a general store on Main Street for many years before it burned down in 1942. After that time much of the grocery shopping took place at Piggly Wiggly store on Park Avenue which opened in 1944 adjacent to later construction that added parking for cars Unlimited Inc., later known as FedEx Ground
