Mauldin is a small town in South Carolina, located about 25 miles south of the state capital Columbia. The population was 5,422 at the 2010 census. It lies on the edge of the Pee Dee Mountains and is bordered by Greenwood to the east, Spartanburg to the north, and Greenville to the west. The town's ZIP code is 29622. The name Mauldin comes from an early settler named John Mauldin who came in 1775 from Waltham, England with his family. In 1824, Jno. Mauldin Jr., son of John Mauldin Sr., started a sawmill in what is now Mauldin and built a chicken coop on nearby Mount Pleasant Hill as part of his efforts to settle land around this area. In 1881, James Auld purchased 1/2 mile (3 km) of road leading into present-day Mauldin from Elijah Burchfield for $5 per acre (1 hectare). This helped make it possible for farmers in that area to sell their products directly to consumers rather than having them transported overland or shipped downriver by traders. A post office called "MauldIN" was established in 1885, and remained in operation until 1915. The first store opened there in 1886; it was later renamed "Haley’s Store." The first telephone service arrived here in 1888; it was replaced by an electric line in 1925. In 1902–03 two men named Hinton made a discovery of coal near present-day Kingston which led to their manufacturing company being founded there that same year - Hinton Coal Mining Company Ltd.. From 1916 until its closure in 1984, the Maudlin Baptist Church served as both community center and church building for this small town during its time as one block off US 441 just east of downtown Hauptsboro . In 1951 when County Roads were rerouted through town due to development within walking distance instead of outlying farms they left US 441 unprofaned while still providing access within walking distance for residents including many elderly people who used bicycles or walkers because cars had been taken away
