Mauldin is a small town in the State of South Carolina. It is located about 30 miles southeast of Charleston and is part of the Greenville-Anderson County, SC Metropolitan Statistical Area. As of the 2010 census, Mauldin had a population of 927 people. Mauldin was founded in 1821 by Captain John Davenport and his wife Sarah Bedsole Davenport. The first post office in Mauldin was established in 1822. In 1846, Captain John Davenport's son-in-law, James Aiken, donated land to build a school which became known as "Aiken School" after him. In 1865, General Andrew Johnson ordered all Confederate forces to disarm and leave South Carolina. This order caused many people in Mauldin to rebel against the Confederate government. On July 5th, 1865, three days after General Johnson's order was issued, Union troops marched into town and arrested most of the rebels who had gathered there including Captain John Davenport Jr., James Aiken Sr., Mr. Grier (a farmer), Mrs. Grier (a woman), and several children including Sarah Bedsole Davenport Jr.. The Confederates burned down Aiken School while the Union troopers took away all but four bricks from it - these were used to build First United Methodist Church on what is now US Hwy 278 across from Pee Dee Airport today (). After the war ended in 1865, most of the rebels were pardoned or released on parole and moved away from South Carolina since they were no longer wanted by either side. Some continued to live in Mauldin until their deaths; for example: Captains John Davenport III & IV (the third generation), Sarah Bedsole Southerland (the fourth generation). After her husband's death she moved with their six children plus one grandson back to Rock Hill where she died at 78 years old on October 12th 2006 . Her daughter Mrs.-Grier still lives there with her 4 grandchildren)

The courthouse building, which replaced an old log courthouse that burned down in 1888, is still in use today as the county courthouse building.
