Mauldin, who served as Superintendent of Schools in Pickens County from 1881 to 1889 and as director of education in Georgia from 1896 to 1899. Mauldin first settled by Scots-Irish settlers in 1800. They built log cabins and raised crops until railroads came through and replaced them with stores and industry. In 1887, Colonel Mauldin donated land for a public schools system that would serve the towns around his plantation holdings. He also donated $20,000 to build a Methodist church in town which opened its doors on July 1, 1888. In 1902, the school board voted to name the new school after General James Longstreet VC (1815-1899), one of America's most famous generals during the antebellum period who had fought against slavery in Mexico and North America before becoming an officer in Confederate forces during the American Civil War (1861-1865). General Longstreet had been recommended for appointment as Superintendent of Schools by then-Governor Andrew Johnson because he had "exhibited unusual ability as a superintendent". After his election as President of Confederate States of America (1865-1868), Johnson appointed him military governor of Tennessee (which included Pickens County) which made him responsible for all educational matters within Tennessee's borders save those pertaining to slaveholding states such as slaves held within their own borders. As part of this responsibility, General Longstreet issued orders forbidding any white men from teaching colored children outside their homes or within five miles of any slaveholding state border without written permission from their masters/owners; this order still remains effective today more than 150 years after its issuance! After General Longstreet's death on October 11th 1898 at age 73 years old while commanding Confederate forces east of Memphis Tennessee during operations known as Peaceful Coexistence or Overland Expedition against Unionists under General Ulysses S Grant (1822-1912) many people began calling contemporary events leading up to his death "The Great Muster" or simply called it "The Great Event". A commemoration event honoring him was held at Fort Sumter on April 14th 1901 attended by president McKinley andVice President Garner; over 100 dignitaries including several governors represented by flags flown above major city buildings across US

Mauldin was first settled by Europeans on October 3, 1670 when John Mawdlew and his family arrived from England on a ship called the "Providence". Mawdlew built a log cabin about two miles west of what is now downtown Mauldin. The first post office in Mauldin was established in 1792. The first store in Mauldin was opened by Wm. Hickey in 1822. In 1827, Jno. Hubbard opened a store at what is now Main Street and Second Avenue. In 1831, James Patton opened a store at Third Avenue and Main Street which became known as Patton’s Store until it closed in 1902. In 1911, there were only four stores left in Mauldin with one being operated by James Fenton and three run by Cushman & Browning which were then combined into one business entity - Fenton's Grocery Incorporated - until it closed down in 1978. The last commercial store to open up hereabouts was Harry Bowers' Supermarket which reopened on Fourth Street after being closed for many years due to bankruptcy issues; however, this business also failed within six months later (December 14, 1978). Since then, most businesses have either been discontinued or have moved away from downtown Mauldin due to its high cost of living or lack thereof compared to other towns nearby such as Greenville or Columbia that offer much lower costs of living for similar sized populations (see graph below). However, some businesses have managed to keep their doors open despite high costs like: Legacy Carpet Cleaning which has been Operating Here Since 1976; Golden Triangle BBQ which started out as Just BBQ but Hasgrown Into A Total Foodservice Business With Multiple Locations Nationwide; And More recently French Broad Brewing Co., Which Opened Up In November Of 2017 And Became One Of The Most Successful Small Businesses In This Area Recently!

Mauldin was founded in 1778 by Captain John Mauldin and his family. The town was named for Colonel James Mauldin, a British Army officer who had fought in the American Revolution. In 1892, the first post office was established in the town. Mauldin is located on County Roads 5 and 149. It has a population of around 4,000 people.
