Gun lights have been used by the military and law enforcement for centuries. In 1892, a U.S. Patent 4,848,604 was issued to George A. Smith for his design of a lighted gun that he called the “Gunsight Gun”. The patent is still in use today as the basis for many modern firearms sights. In 1894, Mauldin Rifle and Pistol Club purchased a pair of Smith & Wesson Model 6 revolvers with single-shot gunsights from George A. Smith of Springfield, Massachusetts. These pistols were first issued to members of the club at their annual meeting on October 25th, 1894. At this meeting, it was decided that shotguns should also be equipped with single-shot gunlights as they were becoming more common in America (see shotgun article). The firstgunsights patented by George A. Smith were designed to be attached to either side of an octagonal barrel by means of four screws (later upgraded to six screws) which held the sight in place during operation (see Figure 1). These sights were later improved to include adjustable turrets and could be used with either left or right handed shooters (see Figures 2-3). 10 years after their initial creation, these gunsights became standard on all new American handguns and rifles introduced into service between 1914 and 1945 (See shotgun article). Mauldin is a town in Spartanburg County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Greenville Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in Mauldin was John and Betty Sheppard in 1865. They built a log cabin on what is now US-211. The Shepards were followed by other early settlers including Jno. Hargrave and his wife Sarah who founded a farm on what today is US-211 north of Mauldin early in 1868. Others settled around this time include James Fenton, sr., Hiram Stephenson, Geo Waddell and others who arrived around 1870 or so along with Daniel Boone for hunting purposes near present day Old Fort Sill on the Blue Ridge Parkway. In 1875 Richard Crouse moved to Mauldin from Greenville and set up a small store on Main Street which still stands today as Crouse's Mercantile Agency. By 1880 Mauldin had acquired its own Post Office under mail delivery service from Greenville until it was discontinued in 1907 when that city became too large for the then one office depot per mile (1/4 mile). On July 8, 1886 Union Pacific Railroad officials laid tracks through town east of their current location just south of present day Beech Grove Roadsteads School while they were engineering plans for their new line between Charlotte and Atlanta; this caused great excitement as it marked the end of days for local farmers markets that sold produce from their homes east of Union Depot! The growth of Mauldin during the late 19th century was due to two factors: both its proximity to major transportation hubs - Spartanburg County had three railroads within 15 miles (24 km) - as well as its access to good land for farming based upon ownership by white men who purchased grants from local chiefs orchieving tribal title over what is now known as rural areas surrounding town limits subject only to annual crop rotation or “rustling” which allowed free access to vegetables, fruits and other game not typically hunted by European settlers but reserved exclusively for Native Americans whose lands were ceded following British Indian War treaties in 1794-1795; these open lands led to an increase in agriculture productivity leading ultimately to increased wealth among African American sharecroppers who began working land owned by whites prior to 1861 freed slaves becoming citizens entitled thereby receiving voting rights and benefits enjoyed by those born after January 1st 1863 inclusive In 1916 came World War I which created demand for munitions throughout much of America resulting in an influx into Mauldin businesses especially textile mills across state lines looking for parts suppliers materials being produced nearby like cotton textiles ordered raw by General Motors plants at assembly sheds located adjacent rolling stock yards near Chattanooga TN steel production touching off waves of migration into rural southern Appalachia during this time period people coming primarily from Kentucky Tennessee West Virginia Maryland Delaware North Carolina Georgia Ohio Pennsylvania New York City some going all the way back memories are replete with old timers keeping chickens out front Onions drying on racks next door old truckloads of coal delivered horse drawn wagons entering town Saturday morning hours before heading out Sunday evening
