Mauldin was founded in 1835 and has been a location for cotton plantations and other agricultural operations since the early 1800s. In 1886, it became the first town in Spartanburg County to be incorporated as a municipality. The history of Mauldin can be traced back to 1835 when two men by the name of Jernigan and Hardison arrived in Spartanburg County from Georgia with tickets to purchase 640 acres (240 hectares) of land east of what is now called King's Chapel Road. They named their new community after General Andrew Jackson, who had just won his fourth term as president of the United States that year. At first, only gentlemen were allowed to live there; later women and children were added to the mix. Jernigan remained active in business until his death in 1865; thereafter, Hardison operated the community's affairs until his own death in 1886. During this time, Mauldin experienced some growth and progress: its post office moved from Hartman Ferry on Queen's Island into downtown in 1881; its first school opened doors on November 3, 1884; its Masonic lodge No. 5 was chartered on October 17, 1888; and its first Baptist church (First Baptist Church) was built on December 20th of that year. In 1911, during World War I, Mauldin became an important munitions depot for Spartanburg County as well as Forney Air Field located adjacent to it off US 231 near modern-day Greenwood Drive. From 1917 through 1918 local industries produced over 4 million pounds (1 metric ton) of TNT which helped contribute greatly to Allied victory during World War I . In 1948 Mauldin voted overwhelmingly within its city limits against Confederate statehood within South Carolina - becoming one of only a handful towns statewide that did so . With growing international trade taking place throughout much ofSouth Carolina during this time period including heavy industry down at Forney AFB(now Joint Base Charleston),Mauldin experienced rapid growth starting around 1960 due largely to outflow from Forney AFB(now Joint Base Stewart), intra-city competition caused by infill development along main arterial streets such as Main Street/Highway 278 between USAF Annex Airport south side businesses with military housing developments next door while properties bordering Interstate 95 grew into neighborhoods today with limited access to portions or all aspectsof those communities due primarilyto severe limitations imposed by Army Corps Of Engineers activities relatedto major water projects proposals currently before SC Legislature& Gov John Bel Edwards

His widow continued to run the plantation until her death in 1865. From 1865 until 1970, when it was purchased by African Americans interested in developing it as an integrated black community, the property remained part of white hands until it was transferred to African Americans through deed-of-property ownership. The town of Mauldin began as a small frontier trading post on the Savannah River about halfway between Charleston and Savannah duringCaptain James A. Mauldin's time period (1836-1870). At its peak during this time period, Mauldin had approximately twenty settlers living there with their families including some who later moved away after being forced off their land due to racist practices by local whites. In 1838, Captain James A. Mauldin established a cotton plantation called "Mauldins Plantation". This plantation grew into one of the largest cotton plantations in America which had over 100 slaves working on it at its peak during Captains Mauldins' time frame (1846-1847).
