Mauldin is a town in Spartanburg County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Columbia, SC Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town is named for General James Meredith Mauldin (1758-1834), who fought in the American Revolution and served as a colonel in the Confederate army. The first white settler in Mauldin was Andrew Johnson (1792-1875), who built a cabin on an ancient hunting ground known as "Mauldin's Cave." He also founded what would become the first grocery store in Mauldin. In 1825, John Hargrave (1788-1851) opened his own general store on Court Street. By 1830, there were nine stores operating within Mauldin boundaries; all but one wereowned by men from Spartanburg County or neighboring counties. In 1833, James Fenton established a grist mill on Old Highway 16 about three miles east of town center; he became one of the most important early businessmen in Mauldin. By 1840, Fenton had two sawmills and four blacksmiths operation in Mauldin; he also operated several farms and raised hogs and chickens throughout his life. When Union troops arrived at Fort Sumter in April 1861 during the Civil War, many people left their homes to join forces with the Confederacy or to stay hides across the state line at Moultrie Hill outside of Columbia City. A few dozen residents remaining behind gathered around Captain John Sledge's house on High Street to watch Yankees enter town via McClellan Bridge without incident on April 12th 1861 under orders from Major General Robert Ewell Vance: " here they are! give them no quarter!" Many locals helped build fortifications along Fort Sumter's southern edge while others hid inside buildings until discovered by Union troops later that month...Many people living near Charleston took up arms against their federal government when it became clear that secession was inevitable...A total of 282 citizens including 64 women enlisted into service with Confederate cavalry units during 1862-3...One woman - Mary Elizabeth Cobb - managed to escape capture by Union forces after she surrendered her home at Georgetown Plantation late September 1862...Aftermath: more than 400 soldiers killed,...Three hundred civilians were arrested and transported north to Savannah for trial.... [T]he largest number of casualties occurred among women - 102 dead,...Most civilians died due to disease not combat action."

The town was first settled in 1819 by James Mauldin and his wife Mary as a result of the aftermath of the American Revolution. The name "Mauldin" comes from a Shawnee word meaning "place where corn grows." In 1835, James Mauldin donated land to build what would become Mauldin Academy. The school opened in 1839 and became an important educational institution for African Americans in Spartanburg County. In 1865, it was closed due to racial segregation and reopened as an all-white school under the leadership of Dr. Booker T Washington. After Reconstruction ended following the Civil War, many African Americans were forced to leave Mauldin or move away because they could not find work or get education because white people wanted them gone. Some remain here today including Rev. Al Sharpton who served as mayor from 1984 until 2002 and current Mayor Randy Hillman who succeeded him in 2002 There are also several black churches that continue to serve residents here today such as First Baptist Church which traces its roots back to 1793 and Baptist Missionary Society which arrived in this area in 1795 Some artifacts from early life include Captain John Cook's letter (dated October 4th 1692), coins minted during British rule over South Carolina (1764-1800), clothing given to slaves by their owners (/s/ John Dandridge) during their emancipation (1860), a cannonball found near Palmyra on December 12th 1861/, a slave cabin discovered on February 3rd 1863/, two postcards dated 1909/10 depicting Southerners living near Charleston Island,, negro schoolchildren playing on Saturdays morning afternoons at home,, old shoeshine bottles with cloth handles dating back to before 1900
Mauldin was founded in 1782 by James Mauldin and his wife, Susannah. The town grew around the transportation and trade that came with being on the same county line as Charleston. In 1802, Confederate General Robert E. Lee invaded South Carolina and captured Augusta, Georgia; Mauldin quickly made a deal with the Confederacy to give up his town in return for money and supplies. The town was burned down in 1865 during the American Civil War (the Battle of Mauldin).
