The original routing of KY Route 40 had been concurrent with US 1A for much of its length (except for portions along I-85). In 1865, Confederate soldiers burned down buildings near what is now Piggott Street while occupyingLexington to prevent Union forces from entering. This event is often cited as the start of Lexington's economic decline following the end of World War II. In 1870, Captain William Tredwell donated land for a cotton gin on Rowan Street which soon became one of the largest cotton plantations in South Carolina. There were also several Baptist churches located throughout downtown Lexington before Reconstruction ended in 1868; these churches remain active today and provide social services to local residents. A new courthouse was constructed at Fourth Street and Main Avenue in 1917; this courthouse is still used today and houses various government offices including those responsible for financial regulation within South Carolina's banking system.
In 1833, the first white settlers in Lexington started to arrive. The town was named for General James Wilkinson, who commanded a brigade of British troops during the American Revolution. The town quickly became a center for cotton farming and manufacturing. In 1855, the first post office was established in Lexington.
