Lexington is a small town in Spartanburg County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Spartanburg County. Lexington is part of the Greenville–Spartanburg Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in what became Lexington was John Wesley pronounced Wee-zeeh and he and his family founded a small log cabin on an island in the Hiwassee River, just upstream from present-day downtown Lexington. From this location he began to trade goods with Indians and others in what is now northeast South Carolina. In 1776, when General George Washington's army marched through Spartanburg County during its march to Yorktown, John Wesley welcomed him with open arms and furnished him with clothes, provisions and horses. During the Revolutionary War Lexington sided with America against Great Britain but after the war ended they re-took sides again with Britain because they thought their rights had been forgotten by America. They were wrong; American forces burned down many of their homes during their occupation of South Carolina (the British did not). In 1837 Congressman James Hargrave from Spartanburg County introduced a bill to incorporate what would become Lexington as a city booster organization for Greenville counties along with other nearby towns such as Laurens, Jasper and Andersonville which also proposed incorporation without much success until 1841 when Hargrave's successor James Broughton sponsored legislation incorporating both cities into one new entity called "Lexington". The impetus for this change came about due to concerns over drunkenness and crime being rampant in these towns as well as competition from neighboring city governments which had more money and power. Today it is widely accepted that incorporation was key to creating strong civic institutions within these towns which have helped make them vibrant cultural destinations today even centuries after becoming incorporated municipalities

In 1810, the Spanish colony of South Carolina was founded. The area now known as Lexington was part of this colony. The first European to come to what is now Lexington was a Welshman named Thomas Green who built a cabin in 1795. In 1814, the British occupied South Carolina and established a Fort Moultrie on the border of present-day Lexington and Spartanburg counties. This fort served as an important staging post for Indian attacks on British settlers in what is now North Carolina. In 1819, when the Florida Purchase made Georgia and Alabama part of the United States, South Carolina became a U.S. state. In 1830, after losing its charter as a U.S. state because of congressional inaction over slavery, South Carolina joined with other DeepSouth states in admitting Texas as a republic in 1836
