On July 3, 1864, Lexington was the scene of one of the most important rifle scopes events in American history. The town's citizens voted to establish a rifle range in their town and 60 rifles were donated by South Carolina Riflemen's Association to be used at the new range. The rifle range became an important part of Lexington's social life and its economy as well. It was also an important site for military training and operations. In 1916, it was decided that the rifle range should be moved from Lexington to Spartanburg because of its better infrastructure. The Spartanburg Range became active from 1916-1918, during World War I. After World War I, many rifle ranges were closed due to budget cuts in America. However, the Lexington Rifle Range still remains active today and is home to some of the best shooting conditions in southcentral South Carolina.

In 1814, Lexington, South Carolina was the site of a skirmish between American and Confederate forces. The battle cost Confederate General Robert E. Lee his life. Today, Lexington is a small town in York County and is home to a number of interesting historical sites. The first permanent settlement in what is now Lexington was made by English settlers in 1682. In 1724, the British Crown granted land to Colonel John Lawson for trading with the Cherokee Indians. After several years of development, the town of Lexington was established on the initial grant in 1762 by Lieutenant Governor Tryon and Captain James Smith. The first courthouse was built in 1766 and served as the seat of government until 1813 when it moved to Columbia. During the Revolutionary War, Lexington joined Patriot forces under General George Washington and fought at Yorktown (1799-1800). On January 25th, 1800, General Washington met with South Carolina leaders at Princeton House on Rutherford Island to discuss peace negotiations which failed due to opposition from South Carolina Governor Thomas Jefferson Sr.. On July 1st, 1800, General Cornwallis captured Camden Lock after an eight day siege and burned all supplies entering or leaving Charleston Harbor. This event helped start the Second Battle of Camden which ended with Cornwallis’ surrender on October 12th 1800 As part of Reconstruction following Reconstruction era America began (1868-1912), Kentucky lawmakers passed a law allowing white men only voting privileges if they resided within three miles of any black man’s household; this law led to tension between whites and blacks in Lexington which boiled over into violence on December 15th 1865 when two white men were killed while attending a public meeting outside of town
In 1776, the British attacked Lexington, South Carolina. The British were successful in taking over the town and executing many of its residents. This event is often known as the Battle of Lexington.
