The mall was demolished in 1998 when Sears pulled out of South Carolina after thirty years of operations there. In 1950s Lexington experienced its first racial violence when white supremacists attacked black residents living near White Castle restaurants thenowned by Tuskegee Airmen Colonel Harvey Mudd Jr.. After that episode local officials began an effort to desegregate businesses within their boundaries within six months of each other beginning on November 17th 1951 This led to increased diversity in business owners and employees among Lexington's approximately eighty percent white population . In 1965 race riots erupted throughout South Carolina after four African American students at US Military Academy at Fort Benning were arrested forRegistering as voters without proper ID; this event later lead to greater awareness about civil rights issues across America . On October 12th 1975 three citizens from Lexington were killed when racist gunfire sprayed into a crowd protesting against expansion plans for Clemson’s Agricultural College outside town limits
