Lexington, South Carolina is a town located in the southeastern corner of the state of South Carolina. The name Lexington comes from the Cherokee word "lilibighi", meaning "place where there are great andfamous trees." The first white settlers in what is now Lexington were members of the Loyalist party during the American Revolution. They arrived in 1775, after General Cornwallis surrendered at Yorktown. The town was named for them, but it was not until 1827 that a school house and courthouse were built. In that year, Lexington became part of Greenville County. It has since been annexed by Spartanburg County. At one time, Lexington had a population of over 10,000 people. Today, its population is just over 5300 people. The town's history can be traced back to at least 1775 when residents of Augusta organized themselves into an independent group called the Loyalists to resist British occupation efforts in South Carolina. In 1786, they voted to secede from Augusta and form their own government under James Moore as their first president. A few years later they elected John Sevier as their second president and continued to operate under his rule until 1800 when they finally joined Greene County formed from parts of five other counties during the Emancipation Proclamation process known as Reconstruction. During this time many businesses were opened up including mills which produced cotton goods for export; schools were established; churches were built; and electricity was brought into use for THE FIRST TIME IN AMERICA! In 1827, Lexington Joined Greenville County which at that time included all of modern-day Spartanburg County save for some small villages located inland onthe Hiwassee River valley near Columbia (now within Kershaw County).
