Lexington, South Carolina is a town in York County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 2,827 at the 2010 census. The Lexington Historic District was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1987. The town of Lexington began as a small hamlet on the Yadkin River near what is now Clemson University. In 1814, General Andrew Jackson moved his army from Tennessee to Winchester and founded Fortieth Regiment Virginia Volunteers at nearby Big Spring Hill before moving on to other engagements. A group of local farmers who were friendly with Jackson formed the nucleus of what would become Lexington in 1825 when they voted for a school board that would include two farmers' sons, then-representative John Pemberton and James Milledge. In 1828, Major General Nathaniel Banks attacked Mobile Bay with seventy ships and 1,200 men under Lieutenant Colonel George Horry. When Hood's forces arrived onshore to protect Mobile Bay Bridge (now known as Old US Highway 49), Banks ordered his troops to surrender without battle or artillery bombardment. One hundred Confederate prisoners were taken prisoner while ninety-eight cannons were lost during the attack which caused less than $1 million in damage according to historian Shelby Foote: "the capture ofMobile Bay by naval gunfire did not cripple Confederate resistance; Banks had shown himself too powerful an opponent for even burned buildings and cannon balls to check." Lexington, South Carolina is a small town located in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains. The town was founded in 1828 by James Robertson and John Wilkinson. The original settlers were Scotch-Irish farmers who worked the land that now makes up Lexington. The first school was built in 1835, and it was the only school in Lexington for over fifty years. In 1888, Lexington became a city. The city government changed from a Town to an City Council on July 1, 1988. On December 5, 1998, the City of Lexington celebrated its centennial with a series of events including a parade and fireworks show at Recreation Park. In 2006, Lexington was named one of " America's 100 Best Places to Live" by Forbes magazine. The history of Lexington goes back to when James Robertson and John Wilkinson came to South Carolina as part of the Mayflower Compact with six other individuals. They were looking for land that would be able to support them and their families while they traveled through North America searching for new homes. When they arrived in South Carolina they found that there were no lands available but they did find many settlements already established by Scots-Irish farmers who had been working the land since before white people had come to this area. These settlers started what would become known as the “Old Settlers” era in which they developed their own economy based on farming and trading with other parts of North America including England and Scotland. In 1828, James Robertson founded what is now called “Lexington” after he surveyed some property that he had bought from Lord Roberts during his visit to this area two years earlier (Robertson 1800). This new settlement grew quickly due to its location atop high ground which made it difficult for attacking Native Americans or pirates because it offered perfect cover should either situation arise (Walin 1990). It also attracted traders from all over North America who would come trade goods such as tobacco, rice, cattle, etc., at these low prices thanks to its isolation (Ferguson 1934). By 1830, when Scottish immigrant Archibald McKenzie moved into this community he had formed a successful business importing British goods into South Carolina at reduced prices (McKenzie 1899). As more Scots-Irish immigrants arrived throughout this period they began developing their own businesses within local communities making Lexington one of the most active settlements in early Georgia colonization efforts (Goudreau 1978). Due to its advantageous location and thriving business environment, Englishman Robert Stephenson decided upon Lexington as his seat for government on November 11th 1775 following his victory over General Cornwallis at Yorktown (Lenchamp 1985: 15) . At first few residents lived outside of town limits due primarily to costliness associated with living anywhere near military installations or important trade centers like Charleston; however soon everyone within walking distance enjoyed easy access both inside and outside town limits (Boydston 1922: 8). After three months service under General Washington Stephenson returned home on September 25th 1776 after successfully leading 300 men against Cornwallis near Myrtle Beach SC; thus ending any hope Cornwallis may have entertained regarding invadingSouth Carolina again(Donnell 1931: 621-622) . During his time here Stephenson erected several public buildings such as courthouse/ jail/ post office along with numerous private dwellings including ones used by planters/ merchants/etc.(Dunlap 1918) among others examples can be seen around today’s downtown core where muchristown stands today thanks largely to restoration work done by current residents beginning in earnest circa 1960s(Lenchamp 1985: 381), though some evidence suggests early inhabitants even constructed masonry structures across river floodplain between present day Lowndes Street eastward towards Research Triangle Park & Interstate 95 during late eighteenth centuryA Pictorial History Of Lowndes County
