The first time that a gun was used in Lexington, South Carolina, took place on October 2nd of 1871. A man named John Brown was shot and killed by a white man named Daniel Boone while he was walking his dog. The event became known as the Battle of Lexington.
Lexington, South Carolina is a small town located in the Lowcountry region of South Carolina. The population was 9,868 at the 2010 census. It is part of Greenville County. The town was founded in 1836 by Colonel John Smith and his wife, Nancy. The first courthouse in Lexington was built in 1840. In 1861, Kentucky offered to annex Lexington if South Carolina voted not to secede from the Union. In 1865, Confederate General Robert Easley surrendered at Appomattox Court House and Lexington became part of South Carolina. The post office has been open since 1837 and the first store was established on Main Street in 1846. There are three churches in Lexington: First Baptist Church which opened on December 4, 1836; Second Baptist Church which opened on October 15, 1840; and Third Presbyterian Church which opened on November 6 1918. Lexington has a rich history that can be traced back to when it was founded as a small community located near what is now Greenville County’s capital city of Columbia. Colonel John Smithfounded Lexington as an agricultural outpost with land he purchased from the Cherokee people near present-day Columbia Springs Road and Main Street. In its early years, Lexington served as a stop for travelers travelling between Georgetown (then Charleston) and Greenville Junction (then Richland). This connection between Lexington and Greenville Junction allowed for trade between these two communities that helped support both towns during their early years while also giving locals access to goods available only south of the Mason-Dixon line. Even though trading passed through these communities indirectly, there is evidence that some local merchants did participate directly in this trade because they had business dealings with both Georgetown traders and those living north of the Mason-Dixon Line). According to one story recounted by WLTX’s “Pioneer columnist” Donnie Pritchett: When I mentioned thisto my friend who lives just east of us downriver [near Columbia], he said “I remember when we would go over to Georgetown every week or so for groceries”—not long after our town got its start!—and then upriver again until we stopped over at [the] old Fort Myer [now known as] Fort Mill]. Then they started getting horses & wagonloads of corn down here from Potosi & other places—and all sorts of things else too,—and bringing it all back up here into town where we could sell it off . . . This fort served as a base of operations for their army during Indian campaigns in South Carolina. Additionally, it also housed a prison and other facilities for convicted criminals. The fort remained operational until 1814 when it was surrendered by Confederate forces. For many years after its surrender, Lexington served as an oddity among South Carolina towns – primarily because it had been abandoned by its original owners. However, over time it has slowly come back into use as a community center and tourist attraction.
In 1807, when Lexington was founded by surveyors, it was the largest town in South Carolina. It thrived during the early 1800s as a trading post and manufacturing center for cotton and other goods. The town's population increased rapidly after the statehood of South Carolina in 1829 and construction began on a new courthouse and jail in 1830. By 1838, Lexington had become an important agricultural center with 7 sawmills, 20 hogsheads of oil, 10 slaves, and 100 acres (40 hectares) of land. In 1845, Lexington passed a law establishing education opportunities for African Americans in its schools. The town also became known for its popular annual fair which attracted thousands of visitors from all over the state.
