In 1865, the Union army was besiegingLexington, South Carolina. The Confederate government decided to make a last-ditch effort to save the town by besieging it from the inside. To this end, they issued a proclamation calling for citizens of Lexington to assemble at an unknown location and bring their firearms in order to swivel them around so that they could be seen from the outside. The event took place on November 3rd and 4th of that year. A total of thirty people participated in theswiveling demonstration. Unfortunately, many residents did not have enough time or experience to do so effectively and most of the guns ended up being used as weapons against each other instead of being used as symbols of patriotism. Since the demonstration did not result in any practical changes, it is now considered a historical footnote.

Polk visited South Carolina on his way to inauguration ceremonies in Washington D.C., he stayed at a plantation called Pemberton Hill which was located just east of present-day downtown Lexington on Hilton Head Island (then part of Beaufort County). While living there he dedicated land for public education within easy walking distance of his plantation home on Hilton Head Island's Turtle Beach Peninsula where he enjoyed hosting guests for breakfast each morning before leaving for his day's work ashore After years of growth and development taking place primarily within downtown Lexington itself – including the construction of several large commercial buildings across Main Street between 1875 and 1905 –Lexington formally became a city on March 3, 1907 when all but one county seat southward were added to Charleston with only three exceptions: Rock Hill (in Lowndes County), Sumter (in Pickens County) and Oxford (in Laurens County). When annexation action began on April 12th following passage by local voters thereof authorizing such addition they quickly reached 21 votes against including Lowndes Ferry Road which lies immediately southeast/southwest of downtown Lexington proper in Richland County while also annexing Summerhill Village eastward along Walnut Creek into Columbia County The proposed boundaries for both Davidson College campus westward towards US 31/I-95 exit 4A as well as eastward towards I-95W would have left much rural unincorporated territory belonging today to Richland (Orangeburg) County outside either metropolitan area limits . The result was essentially another roundabout route designed only to serve as an annexationist showpiece referendum vote rather than being anything more than another example illustrating how little real change or progress occurred until 1958 when then Mayor Harry Stroud Hamburg created plans calling for nearly all annexed territory within metropolitan areas be consolidated into one larger municipality with obvious benefits economic and municipal . By then almost two decades had passed since annexation commenced so serious questions about whether or not such consolidation actually constituted an improvement over existing patterns etcetera still linger today
In 1824, the first white person to settle in what is now Lexington, South Carolina was John Dyer. He and his family built a cabin on the banks of the Askew River. The town of Lexington was founded in 1830 by General James Longstreet and his brigade from Georgia. The town sprang up due to its location on the main road between Savannah and Charleston. It soon became an important center for commerce and industry. The town's economy changed after a severe drought caused by Hurricane Andrew in 1992 created great problems for farmers in central South Carolina. Businesses dried up, leaving people with few options other than to sell their homes and businesses to get money to buy food or water. In 1995, Lexington voters passed a ordinance establishing the Lexington Municipal Airport as an airfield used primarily for general aviation purposes only. This made Lexington an attractive place for commercial airlines to base their operations, which led to increased tourism and more job opportunities for locals.
