In 1831, Colonel Fenton sold his plantation to Hugh graded Davis who renamed it "Davis' plantation" after himself (Hugh being his initials). This left Lexington with only two settlers – James Waddell (a Tennessee native) and Samuel Gibbs – until 1840 when Knoxville lawyer Daniel Boone came into contact with local traders through correspondence about purchasing land near present-day Clemson University which he thought could be used to establish a new capital city for South Carolina called Columbia if botany were to flourish there among others similar interests aroused his interest; accordingly in 1840 Boone purchased 1/3 mile (1 km) south of Davis' plantation on Catawba River from David Catesworth located then just outside modern-day Clemson University's campus boundaries).
