Gun chokes continued to be used by Confederates throughout 1862 and 1863. In particular, on April 15th, 1863, Confederate General Pemberton ordered his brigade’s artillery commander Colonel John Crain to use gun chokes against Union forces near Chilton Plantation in order to protect Confederate troops retreating across Baytown River. The Union guns successfully destroyed two cannons belonging to General Pemberton’s brigade while also inflicting significant casualties on the Confederate army’s command structure; however, no fatalities occurred as a result of this engagement. Later engagements between Confederate and Union armies saw increasingly sophisticated munitions such as canisters filled with explosive powder being employed against targets far beyond cannon range; however, gun chokes remained one of the most devastating weapons available to both armies during these conflicts.
