In Lexington, South Carolina, the history of firearms and clothing is intertwined. The city was founded in 1795 by General James Longstreet and became a slaveholding society. After the American Revolution, gunpowder manufacture began in town and weapons were manufactured throughout the Confederacy. From 1861 to 1865, Lexington was one of the Confederate capital cities. For eleven years thereafter all handguns in Lexington were confiscated without cause or trial; this policy changed on May 1st 1875 when Mayor John Smedley issued an ordinance allowing citizens “to own any kind of rifle or shotgun they please” with no limit on number possessed per day/year. In 1895 rifle manufacturing resumed in town but pistols continued to be confiscated until 1875 due to Prohibition laws which did not allow for private ownership of firearms

By 1865, however, Lexington had shrunk to just over 50 people and ceased to exist as an independent community.
