Lexington, South Carolina is a small town in the lower Pee Dee region of South Carolina. The population was 3,811 as of the 2010 census. It is part of the Columbia metropolitan area. The first residents of what would become Lexington were farmers who came overland from Georgia in 1819. They cleared land and built their homes on bluffs overlooking the Elizabeth River. In 1825, they voted to incorporation as a village under the name "Lexington". In 1868, Lexington voters approved a $5 per capita tax for school purposes and also authorized the erection of a courthouse and jail. The community experienced rapid growth during Reconstruction; by 1870 it had 16 businesses and 1,500 citizens. By 1893, Lexington had grown to 22 businesses with an estimated population of 507 people and 2 schools (one high school). During World War II, many companies located in Lexington enlisted in the military because they needed skilled workers. With limited labor available after Pearl Harbor, most companies turned to voluntary internment camps instead. Two large companies-Citizenship Paper Products Company (now JBS Foods) and Hormel Foods-operated concentration camps here for more than two years until early 1945 when conditions improved enough for them to be closed down without notice to employees or customers.
