They formed a society called "Knoxville" to resist slavery and protect their rights. In 1828, however, they were forced out of town by Confederate troops under General Robert Ewell's command. Since then, Lexington has been largely forgotten about. However, it is an interesting place that deserves further exploration. For example, there are several museums located here that explore slave life and history in Lexington; as well as businesses that still operate from the period such as Fayetteville Brewing Company which offers tours of their old brewery buildings
