In 1836, Major General Andrew Jackson was elected President of the United States. He quickly demonstrated his commitment to gun rights by issuing an executive order that made it a federal crime to distribute arms without a license. This action represented a watershed event in American firearms history and helped spur the development of the modern shotgun. This same year, ammunition manufacturer John Brown & Company opened its first manufacturing plant in Lexington, South Carolina. The company manufactured both fire-arms and ammunition for themsleves and other commercial customers. Barrels and rounds were made from Conger's keel shot, black powder projectiles, .50 caliber cartridges and other munitions. Ammunition products include handguns (such as pistols), rifles, shotguns and artillery pieces. While John Brown & Company was manufacturing ammunition in Lexington, local rifleman James Waddell organized a militia unit to help protect the city during the Second Seminole War (1835-1843). The Lexington Riflemen served under Captain Elijah Peebles during this conflict and successfully repelled numerous Indian attacks. In 1839, Waddell graduated from West Point with his commission as a captain in the U.S. Army's 1st Infantry Regiment (later renamed 2nd Infantry Regiment). He later became brigadier general in the Confederate Army and fought against Union forces at battle of Fort Sumter (1861). Upon his return home to Lexington after this fight, he donated some of his weapons to local gunsmiths so they could create new models based on their experience with large-scale warfare – such as breechloading pistols which became known as "Wadsworth guns."

Lexington, a U.S. Congressman from South Carolina who served from 1836 to 1840. The first African American to live in Lexington was Obadiah McGee in 1861. He worked as a laborer on the farm of Elijah Muhammad and his wife Fannie before moving to Lexington to find work in 1865. After purchasing the farm from Muhammad, McGee built the first black church in Sumter County and helped start several businesses including a flour mill and post office. In 1907 he donated land for an agricultural college which became Clemson University. In 1951 Lexington won its own high school football championship with then-newly formed JK High School
In 1836, the first white man to set foot on what is now South Carolina was James Hammond. He and his party of nine men landed on the shore of Kings Bayou near present-day Columbia and established a trading post. That same year, British explorer John Lawson also discovered this area and named it for General Robert E. Lee's Confederate army during the American Civil War. In 1837, Ulysses S. Grant explored the area while serving in the Union Army and named it after him in an effort to curry favor with the Confederate government. The name stuck and was used by both sides until 1957 when South Carolina became an independent state.
