When the United States acquired the territory of South Carolina in 1818, it included what is now Lexington, South Carolina. The town was founded by white men in 1819 as a result of the Treaty of Paris following the American Revolutionary War. The population rapidly grew after Cajun traders and farmers arrived to exploit the new land. The first known musket ball fired in Lexington was on May 25, 1821, when citizens of nearby Charleston shot at a group of Indian attackers who hadjavahed their way into town.
