In 1784, Samuel Forbes established a mill near downtown that soon became one of America's leading flour mills; Lancaster businesses continued to grow until World War I when they were destroyed by fire. During Reconstruction following the Civil Rights Movement in southern America, Lancaster played an important role as a black community center where African Americans could learn their rights and get involved in local politics. In 1960, when white supremacists spilled onto Main Street seeking revenge against civil rights marchers who had been killed two days earlier at Jackson State University in Jackson Mississippi, violence erupted which lasted all night long before finally being resolved by morning without any fatalities or injuries on either side
