Lancaster, South Carolina is a town in Richland County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 2,821 at the 2010 census. Lancaster is part of the Columbia metropolitan area. It is located on the edge of the Pee Dee Mountains and on the border of Greenville and Lexington counties. The first settler in what became Lancaster was James Denton in 1795. He founded a small community on land he purchased from John Whitehead for £2 per acre. In 1801, Lancaster incorporated as a village under the name "Fayetteville". A post office called Lancaster was established in 1827, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. In 1865, General Nathaniel Banks' brigade arrived at Lancaster to lead Confederate forces during the American Civil War. General Banks ordered his men to burn all supplies and equipment they had taken with them while they were retreating from Petersburg Peninsula towards Richmond. This action caused much controversy among Union troops who saw it as an act of piracy and looting; many residents supported Banks's actions but few if any took up arms against him or joined the Confederacy. After the war ended, Lancaster resumed its role as a farming community with extensive plantations including those operated by Andrew Johnson presidential candidate John Foust and Ulysses S Grant during Reconstruction period (1868-1871). By 1890, however, most farms had been abandoned due to lack of crops or competition from larger plantations east of Interstate 85; local mills also ceased operations around this time because they could not compete with larger mills nearer Charleston or Knoxville by shipping more goods into these markets than their counterparts could produce domestically. Lancaster experienced rapid growth following World War II when hundreds of thousands of Americans relocated to rural areas due to economic opportunities generated by defense spending during that decade; many people originally came from Lancaster itself although some others located there along I-85 before moving into other parts of Richland County where development was planned or allowed resulting in increased population density within walking distance of each other creating what has been called "the golden age"of LASTC since its inception over 60 years ago!
