Lancaster, South Carolina is a city of over 200,000 people located in the Lowcountry region of southeastern South Carolina. Lancaster was founded in 1738 by white settlers who established a trading post on the Calhoun River. The town grew rapidly due to its location and natural resources, and by 1800 Lancaster had over 1,500 residents. In 1878 Lancaster became the capital of South Carolina after Charleston was destroyed by Union forces during the American Civil War. In 1903 Lancaster was renamed for General James A. Garfield, who served as president from 1881-1885 and 1894-1901. During Reconstruction in South Carolina, many African Americans were convicted of crimes such as murder or robbery to gain access to education and work opportunities denied them under previous laws. Many black men worked as gunmen for white supremacists during this time period in order to support their families. Some of these gunmen may have been known as “soft guns” because they were not intended for combat use and could be easily converted into rifles or shotguns under the right circumstances. One such gunman was Willie Horton (real name: William Donald Horton), who committed three murders between 1978 and 1982 while serving time for a nonviolent crime conviction that disqualified him from owning a gun but did not stop him from using his fists and knives to commit robberies. After his release from prison Horton began targeting low-income communities in Philadelphia suburbs with violence beginning in 1984 until his capture on November 20, 1987 following a two-year manhunt which ended with his death at the hands of police officers inside Philadelphia’s Central Station gangsta district. Following Horton’s death white supremacists made claims that he had been helped by black terrorists in order to carry out their attacks against whites throughout Philadelphia suburbs; however this allegation has never been substantiated beyond some racist graffiti found near where he killed himself

However, thanks to various business ventures led by John Lancaster himself as well as investments by others including friends James Fenton and Jesse Forester, the community gradually began to prosper throughout the late 1800s and into the early 1900s despite some natural disasters such as a fire that destroyed much of downtown in 1897; floods which struck three times between 1902-04; an tornado hitting town on November 7th 1908; then again on April 9th 1950;and finally Hurricane Floyd which damaged parts of town August 25th 1969 In 1907, John's son Jonathan completed construction of a school building which served as both public library until 1954 when it was replaced with First Baptist Church (now known as Ebenezer Baptist) located across Market Street from present day City Hall In 1954 also occurred significant renovations/updates including new windowsills/veneering/gable end trim work inside church walls since date . Additionally old jail cells were converted into classrooms within First Baptist Church..
