Lancaster, South Carolina is a small town located in Lancaster County, South Carolina. The population was 7,612 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Lancaster County and home to the Lancaster County Courthouse and some of the best shopping in South Carolina. Lancaster has been inhabited by humans since Pre-Columbian times. The first Europeans to visit what is now Lancaster County were Frenchmen in 1663 who named it for John Lambert, 4th Earl of Leicester, who had purchased land from the Indians east of Charleston Harbor. In 1727, George Washington made a survey of Cumberland Valley which included parts of present-day Lancaster County when he prepared his map which would become America's first official document drawn up by an American government official. The early history of this area is filled with mystery and intrigue because much important events occurred here that have never been fully documented or understood. One such event happened on October 6th 1839 when Elijah Poole founded Poole’s African Methodist Episcopal Church in what is now known as downtown Lancaster. This church marks the beginning of white supremacy in this part of America where black people were still considered second class citizens. The town was platted in 1837 by Captial John Sibley and James Dillard who desired to create a commercial center due to increased trade between their townships and neighboring Randolph County during the 1830s gold rush era. The townspeople built a courthouse and jail on High Street within one year; however, these buildings burned down in 1841 while they were being constructed due to arsonist activity by local farmers looking to sabotage future construction projects by local Native Americans living nearby! In 1840, Captain Sibley sold parcels totaling 2 square miles (5 km²) along High Street to James Dillard for $850 per acre ($2 million today). The first inhabitants of Lancaster were white planters who settled there around 1780. The first post office was established in 1785 and was called Union. In 1820, Lancaster became a district on the original system of justice for all counties in South Carolina. It had a district attorney and court houses were built between 1830 and 1840 by Judge John Hoyle. In 1874, Lancaster voted to secede from Columbia County and become an independent municipality under its own government with a mayor and councilmember. In 1895, Lancaster annexed neighboring Laurens after it lost its water rights toColumbia County because Lexington annexation would have left Laurens without water supplies if it became an independent municipality like Lancaster did not want to become part of Columbia County again just as Lexington wanted to do The annexation made Laurens an official city which served as its seat until 1907 when merger with more populous Columbia City resulted in less land for development so both cities stopped receiving mail service from each other In 1922, when floodwaters destroyed much of downtown Charleston, parts of Laurens were damaged including what is now known as "The Gables" which has been preserved as a historical landmark (see photograph below) Aftermath caused many businesses to move out into surrounding neighborhoods until most people had evacuated before Superstorm Floyd hit in 1954 causing extensive damage
