The first documented reference to Lancaster comes from an ancient survey map made in 1685 by James Denton. In 1710, Captain John Smith discovered a small island called "Lancaster" off the coast of modern day Lancaster County while sailing his estate ship "Exeter". The island's discovery likely led to its name being given to the settlement which began forming around this time. In 1786, two brothers named David and Jonathan Patton founded a trading post known as Fort Patten on what is now Santa Rosa Island off of Lancaster's coast. This location served as a convenient port for goods imported into or exported out of colonial North Carolina and Georgia before becoming an important military staging ground during Indian War campaigns in western South Carolina. In 1812, when American forces invaded Canada following their victory over Napoleon Bonaparte at Yorktown, General Andrew Jackson ordered Colonel Isaac McCoy to establish a fortified detachment within Lord Cornwallis' army at Paynesville on Palmetto Key with orders to protect General Cornwallis' retreat should he fall back towards Charleston Harbor following his successful campaign against Robert Ewing's Creek Colony forces near New Bern Ferry Landing on December 12th that year. Captain John Smith visited Fort Patten again in 1789 while aboard HMS Bounty during his exploration voyage along coastal North Carolina's saltwater coastline. He mentioned an isolated community named "Lancaster" situated several miles due north of where he had last seen it on his previous trip twelve years earlier while exploring Bristol Bay region between Stonington Harbor and Cape Lookout National Wildlife Refuge). On July 1st 1837 – one year after Captain John Smith's landfall near modern day Chesapeake Bay – another group of Scots-Irish immigrants disembarked from the brigantine "Mayflower" at Norfolk Point about eight miles northeast of present day Lancaster City limits on Beaufort River (the same river that forms part of municipal boundaries with adjoining towns such as Spanish moss and Greeneville). These newcomers were seeking new land opportunities after experiencing economic decline brought about by many frontier communities throughout southern Appalachia (mainly due Hurricane Catastrophe) including ones such as Cherry Valley (now Tellico Plains), Hopewell Junction (now Tellico Hills), McKeesport (now Monaca), Beech Bottom Plantation (now Beech Bottom), Pee Dee Plantation (now Milton), Mockspur Township (now Oxford Mills) etc., which were rapidly depleting due to increased development pressures associated with white settlement westward along newly purchased lands stretching from Virginia through Kentucky into Tennessee Valley Province - renamed Tennesseeessee Territory after Union victory over Confederate forces at Appomattox Court House late April 1865]. Assembled here were men born or raised within thirty miles radius OF Lancaster; Samuel Gregg[?], James Moffet[?], John Watts[?,] George Washington Harris[?,] William Haught[?] among others". By 1850 only ten percent remained living within twenty five miles radius; most within five miles radius although some lived beyond fifty miles away." The early settlers worked mainly agriculture but soon developed trade links with surrounding counties including Bostonport(later Savannah) for cotton exports via sea transportation; also providing access to lumbering resources used for building homespun Butlerian rugs popular throughout muchof antebellum America." During Reconstruction local Democrat officeholders unsuccessfully pushed for statehood despite deep political divisions between Free Soilers/ Republicans & White Democrats/ Loyalists ruling respectively over regions stretching southward From Asheville thru Greensboro thru Wilmington NC all THE WAY DOWN TO Tallahassee FLAGSHIP COUNTIES INCLUDING LANCASTER SOUTH CAROLINA." Reconstruction ended with return Of Union troops & return Of Jim Crow Laws in late 1876." Today many descendants continue ancestry here through marriages intermarrying elsewhere…"
