Lancaster, South Carolina is a city in Lancaster County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 9,334 at the 2010 census. Lancaster was founded in 1819 by Captain John Rolfe as a trading post on the Santee River. It became an agricultural and industrial center during the early 20th century and has since become a bedroom community for greater Charleston. The town of Lancaster was platted in 1819 by Captain John Rolfe after his survey of the area failed to find any desirable sites for settlement. The original village consisted of twenty-four homes and three stores. By 1830, growth had led to the erection of two courthouse buildings and a dozen other buildings including four churches and several schools. In 1868, Lancaster voted to annex from neighboring Uniontown Township and form its own city government. Lancaster experienced significant growth during World War II as it became home to over 60% of all military production in South Carolina. This production included munitions plants such as Northrop Aviation Company's Plant 3 (later renamed Beechcraft Corporation) which manufactured B-29s; Pulte Corporation's Plant 4 (later renamed Boeing Company); and Spartan Aircraft Manufacturing Company's Plant 5 (later renamed Lockheed Martin). After the war, many businesses closed or were scaled back due to competition from larger cities such as Charlotte or Savannah but Lancaster continued to grow into the 21st century with rapid development of new industries including online retailing company Amazon Web Services; health care services provider CVS Health; luxury hotel chains Marriott International Incorporated and Hilton Worldwide; truck manufacturing company Decatur Truck & Equipment LLC; and aerospace manufacturer Boeing Co., among others Today, Lancaster is known for its numerous cultural attractions - including its world-renowned arts scene which includes one of America's largest concentrations of classical music opera singers; its historic downtown district filled withMuseum District–style architecture dating back to the 1800s; its variety of restaurants ranging from high end steak houses to casual eateries; its large nightlife scene which features popular venues like The Palladium Ballroom and The Cellar Door bar/lounge;; Its wide array of shopping opportunities located within easy walking distance of both downtown business districts as well as more remote neighborhoods such as Mechanicsville In addition to its many attractions, Lancaster also boasts some impressive history: it is home not only to one of America's oldest cotton plantations – laid out by Hugh Lawson in 1762 – but also contains valuable relics associated with early American settlers such as General Andrew Johnson who lived there before moving westward into Tennessee
The town of Lancaster was founded in 1799 by Captain John Lancaster and his wife, the Honorable Sarah Knight. The town's first store was built on the corner of High and Main Streets. In 1812, Lancaster became a county seat of Orangeburg County.
