Lancaster is a town in Spartanburg County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 8,010 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Greenville–Spartanburg–Anderson Metropolitan Statistical Area. Lancaster was founded as a town on December 12, 1875 by James Meeks and others from neighboring Lenoir County to warehouse goods for export to Europe. The first settler in Lancaster was David Lovejoy who arrived in 1876. Lovejoy's brother-in-law John Aiken bought land in what is now Lancaster from David Lovejoy for $1 per acre. Aiken named his land "Aiken's Landing" after him and it continued to be so until 1907 when it changed its name to "Lancaster". The original settlers were mostly farmers with some slave labor used for farming and other chores around the landing site until 1865 when the USDA began oversees West Point Plantation as part of Reconstruction following the American Civil War. From 1865 through 1885 there were only six families living here; three came during Reconstruction and three more followed shortly thereafter once white flight became an inevitability following the end of slavery in America. In 1865, a Methodist Episcopal Church (later known as First Baptist) church was built on what is now Main Street in Lancaster by Revs John Coyle (1812-1892) and George Waddell (1820-1900). The cornerstone bears the date December 12th, 1875 which indicated that this church had been started much earlier than later churches that would be established elsewhere in Spartanburg County such as Rocky Mount or Laurens. This earlychurch served not just Lancaster but also parts of Lenoir County including New Bern which lies west of present day Lancaster on Interstate 95 between North Charleston and Columbia SC . For many years Reverend Coyle officiated at both services In person or via proxy from his home near Presbyterian Meeting House on Tryon Street across from today’s Kmart store building off US Highway 26 about one mile NW of downtown Lancaster. Reverend Coyle’s tomb can still be seen close to where he officiated at AMEChurch Services each week long ago! When locomotive #1035 rolled over logs outside town limits while traveling down Old Route 11 on October 10th 1889 during its annual visitations tour Pennsylvania RR engineers William “Pete” Post & Edward Sprague happened upon this unusual sight.. After further investigation they concluded that this accident must have been caused by mice rather than humans because no tracks could be found leading back up Old Route 11 either ways! To this day OSHA continues their investigations into theserailroad accidents! This event helped start what would become known as "The Great Locomotive Robbery" which took place throughout South Carolina over a period of several months starting late November 1889 with robberies taking place at least twice daily along Railway Road between Kershaw Junction east of Saluda/Greenville SC & White Springs east of Uniontown/Lenoir City SC . By early January 1890 all trains within 25 miles radius had been robbed with most incidents taking place inside South Carolina except for one robbery reported near Confederate Memorial Park northwestOf Yorktown SC . This railway Robbery has come to symbolize robbers taking advantage of unsuspecting travelers operating southbound on railways
