Lancaster, South Carolina is a small town located in Chester County, of the state of South Carolina. The population was 5,914 at the 2010 census. Lancaster has been inhabited by various cultures for centuries and its name may come from one of these origins. The first European to visit Lancaster was Giovanni da Verrazzano in 1497. He named it "Lancaster" after his hometown of Venice, Italy. In 1815, when the United States acquired Southwest Florida from Spain, Lancaster became part of that territory and remained so until 1898 when it became a part of the newly created circuit court district in Charleston. As a result of this change in jurisdictional boundaries, many people in Lancaster lost their homes and businesses during this time period as well as some who gained them back later on. The town's history can be traced back to 1729 when Capt Benjamin Hull founded Hull's Fort on an island near present-day downtown Lancaster while he explored what would become South Carolina as part of his military campaign against Native Americans called the Cherokee Expedition. One year after Hull's expedition arrived in South Carolina, he founded another fort at what is now known as Yorktown Plantation which served as a training ground for future Confederate General Robert Ewell Jackson during the American Civil War (1861- 1865). In 1792 Captain John Kirke erected a sawmill on Mill Creek which contributed greatly to Lancaster's growth and prosperity during that era; however, even with Kirke's milling ability available nearby there were not enough workers to sustain much economic activity without specialized tools or equipment unavailable locally or too expensive for most farmers to afford. Consequently, early mills closed down or were forced out of business because they could not compete with better-equipped mills built by outside manufacturers coming into operation during this time period; however, some continued operations until around 1820 due to their location within easy access by wagon road or boat ride from other parts ofSouth Carolina. Also important during this time was the development within local society along gender lines; women began working alongside men beginning around 1800 primarily in textile production but also ventured into other aspects such as farming and mercantile pursuits soon thereafter becoming established leaders within their communities both politically and economically speaking. During Reconstruction following America's Civil War (1861- 1865), many African Americans who had fought for Union forces relocated westward across the Mississippi River into southern Illinois where they encountered more open living conditions than they had experienced southofthe Mason-Dixon line back home - including opportunities for education and employment opportunities beyond agriculture which led many individuals within black society towards political action once freed from slavery
