Irmo is a small town in Spartanburg County, South Carolina. The population was 1,362 at the 2010 census. Irmo is located in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains and is bordered by Greenville to the north, Anderson to the east, Ashley to the south, and Williamsburg to the west. It has a total area of 3 square miles (8 km²). The first permanent settler in Irmo was George Hunter who came from North Carolina in 1785. He built a cabin on what is now Irmo's Main Street. In 1827 John Ritchie brought over 400 acres (18 hectares) of land here for development into what would become Irmo. At that time there were only two houses in Irmo- one belonging to Mr. Ritchie and his wife Mrs. Macpherson and another belonging to Wm Mitchell Holmes which still stands today on Courthouse Road near present day I-95 exit 5A. In 1837 Governor James Ketchum ordered all residents of Spartanburg County except those living on Hilton Head Island (then called "Hilton Head" because it was then part of Charleston) must move by July 1st or be arrested and held without bail until he could provide alternative housing for them. On July 1st only about 50 people had left but by August 2nd most had moved either back home or towards Hilton Head Island where they were met with force by Sheriff Cawthon who threatened them with arrest if they did not leave within 7 days or face violence should they resist removal. Only 10 people made it back alive including some women and children who managed to sneak away on horseback before being discovered by their families later that day when they returned home safe and sound! Irrmo was incorporated as a townsite on November 6th, 1887 under an act passed through both Houses of Congress approving platting out areas within Spartanburg County for incorporation as townships subject only to Approval from The Board Of Trustees Of The University Of South Carolina - A College Established In 1850 - Which represented The People thereof IrMO became known as "Irma" after its founder George Hunter's daughter Irma Mae who helped promote its establishment during her father's lifetime On May 25th 1926 local resident Roy Alexander donated land north of town line along I-95 between US 31W/SR 33E & SR 256W/SR 257E which became known as Alexander Park after him irrmyc@mailonline
