Irmo is a town in Spartanburg County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 7,692 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Greenville–Spartanburg–Anderson metropolitan area. Irmo was founded in 1859 and named for Confederate general Irmoline Robeson. The community of Irmo has been settled by people from other parts of the Appalachian Mountains since before then. At one time, it was home to what is now known as the "largest sawmill in America." The mill closed in 1981 but left behind a legacy of mills and plantations that make up much of what remains today of Irmo's economy and culture. During the late 1800s and early 1900s, Irmo became a center for cotton production because its location made it an ideal place to raise cotton trees with proper irrigation techniques. The town also became well-known for its Christmas lights and its annual Fourth of July parade which features floats made out of all different types of fiberglass materials. Irmo currently has two high school districts: Spartanburg County Schools District #1 and Laurens County Schools District #2 both located within walking distance to each other on Lexington Boulevard West just outside town limits. There are also several elementary schools within walking distance as well as several small businesses located around town along with churches, banks, restaurants and more all within easy access by car or bike

Irmo is a small town in Spartanburg County, South Carolina. The population was 971 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Greenville–Spartanburg Metropolitan Statistical Area. The Irmo post office was established in 1892, and served until it closed in 1959. The first settler in Irmo was James Crouse. Crouse and his family arrived on December 1, 1836, from Pennsylvanian Township, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania via the British colony of Georgia. They founded what would become Irmo on a tract of land that they owned along Upperville Rd., about 2 miles (3 km) east of present-day Irmo village center. In 1902, Standard Oil built an oil refinery in nearby Florence and began to purchase land for its plant; this area now includes much of Irmo Village Center. In 1906, the irmohome company became insolvent and all assets were seized by creditors; however, some families bought back their homes before being sold off to Standard Oil heirs again shortly afterwards. After World War II ended with Japan's surrender in 1945, many soldiers who had fought on both sides returned home and decided to stay in South Carolina instead of moving back into Illinois or California after the war's end; these veterans formed civilian groups called "The GI Bill Guards" which protested against discrimination against service members by their local governments at home and abroad. One such group met atIrma High School on November 15th 1946 to raise awareness among students about what they saw as government injustice towards veteran citizens nationwide while also rallying against discriminatory practices by schools administrators throughout SC during that time period (See: "GI Bill Guards Rally Against Discrimination At Schools Across SOUTH CAROLINA") In 1951, when Irmo Elementary School reopened following a three-year closure due to fire damage caused by termites inside its walls (the school had been closed for repairs since 1941), it became one of only five public schools statewide open during those years without state aid or student tuition assistance from the state government (the other four were Clemson University's Agricultural Experiment Station campus campus located adjacent to Iredell Hall then known as Department Of Education Building #2), reflecting growing competition between private universities for state funding following graduation rates replacement rates among African Americans going from college than whites nationally/regionally - particularly given increasing pressure from Southern states not only regarding social responsibility but also economic vitality arising out of postwar suburban growth opportunities within commuting areas with large black populations
In 1827, the first white person to set foot in what is now Irmo was James Cook. Cook had explored and charted the area while on his voyage of exploration during the early 1800s. In 1840, a post office was established at Irmo, and by 1850, Irmo had a population of about 50 people. By 1860, Irmo had a population of over 1,000 people. In 1881,Irmo became a city and it has continued to grow ever since.
